Choosing The Right Front Door: UPVC Or Composite?

When it comes to purchasing a new front door, it’s important to give it serious consideration, as it plays a crucial role in your home.

The front door is the first thing people notice about your house, and it significantly impacts its overall character. It should not only complement the building’s appearance but also ensures its security.

If your current front door is showing signs of ageing, it’s essential to prioritise its replacement. Two of the top materials to consider are UPVC and composite.

UPVC doors are widely known and recognised by most people. These doors feature an insulated steel frame covered in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC). On the other hand, composite doors might be less familiar to some.

Discovering composite door

The clue is in the name! A composite door is manufactured from a range of materials, which include wood, foam, UPVC and a GRP skin. The latter stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic.

With a realistic wood grain finish, the GRP skin ensures homeowners get the best of both worlds – the traditional beauty of timber with the performance and longevity of more modern materials.

One of the biggest selling points of a composite door is its strength. We are confident you find a stronger or more thermally efficient composite door than what’s available at Clearview Home Improvements.

The different components of a composite door

What are the key differences between a UPVC and composite door?

Unlike the combination of materials that make up a composite door, UPVC doors are made from one material only – plastic. Composite doors are also thicker than UPVC doors, with a frame around 44mm, compared to the 28mm door frame of a UPVC door.

Due to the increase in materials within the door, there is an upgrade in price for a composite door.

UPVC doors might cost less than composite doors, but they are not a lesser product. They also have incredible thermal and security advantages.

How easy is it to clean and look after my composite or UPVC front door?

Very easy! You should clean the door with warm and soapy water once every four months. Avoid solvent based cleaners and abrasive materials.

Once a year, it’s important to lubricate all hardware, paying special attention to the hinges, locks, handles and every other piece of door furniture.

Finally, to keep water out of the seals and increase the longevity of your door, we recommend you remove debris from the threshold and drainage holes on a regular basis. This is especially important if we are experiencing a period of bad weather.
